Got Glue?

1 Aug

Have you heard of GetGlue? If you’re like most people then the answer is no. I was turned onto this by a friend of mine, and I love it.

GetGlue is an entertainment-based social networking website for mobile devices. Users “check-in” to the entertainment that they consume using a website, mobile website, or a device-specific application. The service was launched in October 2008 by AdaptiveBlue, a NYC-based company. In November 2010 GetGlue was called a leader in the emerging social entertainment market by Bloomberg. GetGlue partners include 20th Century Fox, The CW, AMC, ABC Family, Disney Theatrical, Discovery, ESPN, FOX, Food Network, Hachette, HBO, HGTV, MTV, MSNBC, Showtime, Penguin, PBS, WWE, Random House, Simon and Schuster, Syfy, Sony Pictures, Travel Channel, USA Network, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. theatrical.

So what does all that mean? GetGlue lets you “check into” entertainment the same way Facebook and Foursquare let you check into locations. If you’re watching a movie, listening to music, playing a video game, etc. you “check into” what you are doing on GetGlue. This allows you to make comments that other people who like or check into that type of entertainment can see, and you can see comments left by other people. GetGlue is essentially building an entertainment based community over smart phones. GetGlue can also be linked to your Facebook, Foursquare, and Twitter accounts so you can share what you are watching/listening to/playing with your friends and followers. If you like unlocking stuff then you will be  a happy camper. With GetGlue you can unlock “stickers” by checking in. They even have exclusive sticker for things like opening weekend at a movie, or ComiCon.

I was a bit skeptical when I first tried it out, but there are some great people using this app. I have even received some good tips from other users for a video game I am playing. If you’re into social media and want another way to let the world know what you’re up to then I highly recommend you check out GetGlue.
